Plaza de Europa is a seafront square in the old centre of Puerto de la Cruz, beside the Town Hall and the former Santa Bárbara defensive battery. Its broad terrace, cannons and view over the Atlantic make it an easy stop on a walk between San Telmo and the fishing harbour. The square you see today opened in 1992, although this stretch of coast has a much older story.
What will you see at Plaza de Europa?
Walk out towards the sea and the square opens into a broad terrace with a fort-like edge and cannons. From here you can look along the coast and back towards the streets of the old centre. The Town Hall is opposite, and the Real Casa de la Aduana stands beside the Santa Bárbara battery at the harbour end of the plaza. Our own short film shows the square and battery on a walk through the area. Watch it in the original video below. The square and the older battery are different places
Plaza de Europa is the modern public square, inaugurated in 1992 on a site that had held a municipal market and a battery. Its seaward design takes inspiration from historic fortifications. The cannons displayed along the square include eighteenth- and nineteenth-century pieces supplied for the 1992 project. They help tell the story, but the present square itself is not an eighteenth-century fortress.
Batería de Santa Bárbara, beside the old Customs House, recalls the defensive position that protected the old port. Municipal visitor information dates its construction to the eighteenth century, following earlier artillery platforms associated with the Franchy family. Pause here to see how closely the old port, Customs House and coastal defences sat together.
The Town Hall across the square
The Town Hall frontage adds another layer to the scene. The municipality describes surviving parts of the former Dominican convent alongside a newer section shaped by the 1973 works. It is a separate story from the square's 1992 opening. For the building and another of our original films, see Ayuntamiento and Plaza de Europa.
Make it part of an old-town walk
The plaza is in central Puerto de la Cruz beside the Town Hall, close to the fishing harbour. Come for the seafront outlook, then carry on towards the harbour or back along the coast towards San Telmo. Our filmed walk from San Telmo to El Muelle passes the Santa Bárbara battery and helps you place it on the route.
The outdoor square is the focus of this guide. Do not assume that every adjoining historic space is open for visits; check locally if a particular interior or event matters to your plans.
