What has changed in the funding?

In June 2026, the Town Hall announced a municipal allocation of more than €4.1 million for the demolition. The earlier funding plan also included an expected €1.5 million contribution from the Canary Islands Government.

The council approved budget amendment 27/2026 on 28 September, with the approval notice published in the provincial official bulletin on 7 October. Councillor Pedro Antonio Campos García’s budget update identifies a further €1.5 million for the old station’s demolition.

Diario de Avisos reported on 10 October that the expected regional contribution had not reached the council. Quoting councillor David Hernández, it reported that the Town Hall would therefore cover the full €5.6 million cost.

When will demolition begin?

The 10 October report describes tendering through the council’s Contracting Unit as the next step. It gives no fixed start date and reports David Hernández’s hope that work can begin before the end of the current council term.

The Town Hall’s February announcement had envisaged a possible start during 2026 if the necessary steps went to plan. That was a conditional forecast rather than a confirmed schedule.

Why did the old station close?

The old station closed in November 2009 because of structural defects, leaving it out of use as a bus station for almost 17 years. The Town Hall now plans to demolish the deteriorated building as the first step towards redeveloping the site.

Where is the old bus-station site?

The plot covers more than 15,000 square metres and is bounded by Paseo Hermanos Fernández Perdigón, Paseo del Jardinero, Calle El Peñón and Calle El Pozo, around Plaza Francisco Afonso Carrillo. It is a substantial redevelopment site within the town centre.

What is proposed for the space?

The updated preliminary concept described by the Town Hall in February 2026 included a large public square, buildings for public and private uses, and 900 parking spaces across four levels.

These are longer-term redevelopment proposals. The demolition budget should not be read as a confirmed opening timetable for the future facilities.

What does this mean for visitors?

The funding decision is a step towards clearing the old site; it does not mean demolition has begun. Follow local signs and access notices when passing the site.
