Puerto de la Cruz Carnival turns the town into a celebration of costume, music, laughter and imagination. One evening you might find a gala full of extraordinary designs; another brings dancing into the squares, a wonderfully theatrical sardine procession, or the unmistakable sight of high heels racing through the streets. The Grand Parade gathers it all into one dazzling afternoon.
This is your guide to the annual Carnival and the moments worth making time for. The programme changes each year: see our Carnival 2027 guide for the next edition’s early calendar, and our Events page for the latest confirmed listings.

Why Carnival feels special here
The setting is part of the fun. You can wander between the old-town streets, the squares and the seafront and find different sides of the same celebration: a family afternoon, a burst of percussion, an elaborate costume or a late-night dance. You do not need a costume to enjoy it, but a little colour will make you feel at home.
Puerto’s local groups give Carnival much of its character. Murgas bring satire and song; comparsas, batucadas, fanfarrias and dancers fill the parade with rhythm. The town also welcomes German Carnival delegations, a connection that adds another strand to its International Carnival. A very different local tradition, Matar la Culebra, has Afro-Cuban roots and has been performed by schoolchildren as part of the Carnival programme.

Galas, music and family celebrations
The opening and election galas are the place to appreciate the work behind Carnival’s spectacular costumes. Recent editions have included an adult queen, a Grand Dame, a Carnival king and a children’s throne. For a family visit, look for the children’s Carnival, costume activities and daytime performances when the new programme is released.
Outside the galas, Carnival belongs to the streets. Plaza del Charco has hosted orchestras and dancing, while musicians and Carnival groups have appeared in other squares and along town-centre streets. An entrecalles performance can be a lovely way to meet the groups at closer range. The 2026 edition also had a children’s programme and an adult costume contest; the mix will change next time.
If you are choosing just one experience, decide whether you want costume spectacle, daytime family fun or the energy of a street party. Each has a different pace, and the final timetable will help you choose.

Three unforgettable Carnival moments
Mascarita Ponte Tacón
The high-heel race is pure Puerto de la Cruz: extravagant costumes, towering platforms, humour and an enthusiastic crowd. In 2026 the event drew 419 participants over a route of about 600 metres through the historic centre. You can watch without joining the race; if you hope to participate, check the new edition’s rules, registration and route first.
Entierro de la Sardina
The Burial of the Sardine is a mock funeral with music, playful mourning and an enormous sardine effigy. In 2026 the procession ended at the fishing harbour, where the Sardine was burned with fireworks. The mood is theatrical and funny even as the tradition marks a farewell. The route and arrangements change each year.
Gran Coso Apoteósico
The Grand Parade is the big visual finale for many visitors: floats, Carnival royalty, costumed groups, music and dancing moving through town. The 2026 parade included 21 Carnival groups as well as guest delegations. It draws large crowds, so choose a viewing area after the route is confirmed and arrive in good time.

Where to enjoy the atmosphere
Plaza del Charco is a familiar meeting place for Carnival nights and a good place to soak up the town-centre atmosphere. The harbour and seafront have hosted major galas and the Sardine’s dramatic farewell; Avenida Colón and nearby streets have formed parts of past processions and races. Explore our Plaza del Charco guide if you are finding your way around town.
These are places used by previous editions, not a route for the next one. A gala, a parade and a race may start in entirely different spots. Open the current event listing before choosing where to meet friends or watch with children.

Plan your Carnival visit
For a short trip: the days around Mascarita Ponte Tacón and the Grand Parade are worth watching when you choose travel dates. A gala offers a more focused evening; street celebrations suit anyone who wants to wander and join the atmosphere. The next edition’s early dates are in our 2027 guide, with final start times, venues and routes to be checked as they appear.
Where to stay: a central base makes it easy to walk between events, while accommodation away from the busiest squares may suit visitors who prefer a quieter night. Our where to stay guide can help you choose an area. Getting around: leave extra time for crowds and temporary street closures. If you need an accessible entrance or viewing place, check the arrangement for the specific event when it is announced.
Local tips for a great Carnival
- Wear comfortable shoes, even if your costume has other ideas. Spectators may spend hours on their feet.
- For children, try a daytime activity first and choose an easier viewing position at the parade rather than the densest crowd.
- Bring water and sun protection for daytime processions, plus a light layer for the evening.
- Arrange a meeting point before a busy street event. Music can be loud near stages and percussion groups.
- Check the current admission details. Past free galas had capacity limits, and future terms may differ.
