This year's monthly Autumn/Winter talks at the English Library start on November 14 with a fascinating offering by Sheila Perrin entitled "Hurricanes and Harassed Hoteliers: A Day in the Life of a Tour Manager".
Sheila spent many years leading groups to the four corners of the globe, and in this talk she relates some of the more unusual and amusing situations that have occurred during these trips. In December librarian Chris Hair will present a talk on the history of the limerick which will include many examples, tasteful or otherwise. Audience participation is encouraged!
In January Derek Winterbottom relates the enthralling story of the relationship between crime sleuth Agatha Christie and her husband Archie.
February sees the return of Chris Hair with another of his talks on Ancient Egypt: this time he examines the fact and fiction surrounding Cleopatra VII, one of only a handful of female pharaohs that ruled that remarkable civilisation.
The season concludes in March with a talk by Graham Taylor on Marianne North, a Victorian botanist and artist who traveled the world, compiling a journal of her experiences. Graham introduces us to the intrepid explorer and relates her visit to Tenerife.
