A garden shaped by its neighbours
Tomatoes, courgettes, leafy vegetables and herbs now grow alongside shared spaces with fruit trees, banana plants, composting areas and a pond. A Diario de Avisos report on 1 November 2026 describes residents learning as they go, exchanging advice and helping to care for the common ground.
The project has brought together people with different backgrounds and levels of gardening experience. Social organisations also take part, including Visión Azul Autismo. Seed-growing workshops, guided visits and exchanges with other gardens have helped turn the site into a place to meet as well as cultivate.
From unused ground to a community garden
The council welcomed the first participants on 18 February 2026, with support from Asociación La Vereda. The scheme included seven accessible growing spaces and gave priority to local residents, older people and groups with social or therapeutic aims.
The 19,000 m² figure used in earlier announcements describes the wider initiative. The council’s current service specification puts the El Durazno garden itself at approximately 2,500 m².

More plots for Puerto’s neighbourhoods
The municipal network is set to grow. The council’s service specification includes 10 individual plots at Quintana and a planned third garden in La Vera, above the Archipiélago Canario car park. The La Vera site is expected to accommodate around 15 individual plots, alongside shared growing areas.
The proposed support service covers gardening advice, training, materials and activities across the network. These plans give no confirmed opening date for the new La Vera garden.
How does this relate to Los Cachazos?
The garden is in Los Cachazos, the El Durazno area also associated with Puerto’s street-art tanks and the proposed climate refuge. The growing plots are already in use, while the larger climate-refuge scheme has its own planning process. The garden’s progress does not establish that the wider park works have begun.
