The beautiful lush Botanical Gardens (Jardín Botánico) are in the La Paz area of Puerto de la Cruz. Officially known as La Orotava Climatisation Garden (Jardín de Aclimatación de La Orotava) so called because what is now Puerto de la Cruz was originally part of the Orotava Municipality, they cover an impressive area of 20,000 square metres (with work currently underway to expand into an adjacent area adding a further 40,000 square metres to the Garden)
The gardens were created by The Royal Order of King Carlos III of Spain on the 17th August 1788. The idea being to use the gardens as a place for plants and shrubs from the New World (America) to acclimatise before making their onward journey to their final destination in the Iberian Peninsula. (Hence the gardens official name!) The project didn’t work as planned due to the differences in climate between the Canary Islands and Iberian Peninsula.
Despite this, the Garden continued to function and still stands today, where it is one of the most spectacular botanical gardens throughout all of Spain.
Take a meander through the pathways of the garden and enjoy beautiful flowers, lovely scents and awe-inspiring trees with roots so large you need to be careful you don’t trip over them!
Many plants are native to the island, but there is also a vast collection of tropical and subtropical plants rarely found in this part of the world, but which have adapted to the island’s climate despite.
The Gardens are currently open from 9.00 a.m. - 6.00 p.m (with last admission at 5.30pm)
Closed on the follow days 1st January, Good Friday and Christmas Day
