Julio Nieto, the sculptor responsible for the fisherwoman in the harbour of Puerto de la Cruz is also the sculptor behind the “faces” dotted around various gardens and areas throughout the town.
There are five in total, all with the same title “SOMOS LO MISMO” or “We are the same" appeared in Puerto de la Cruz as part of the Mueca programme of 2020.
Creating a route around Puerto de la Cruz, the idea was to represent the five continents of the world – Asia, Africa, Europe America and Oceania.
As the artist himself has said “They represent the races or inhabitants of these five continents; they are a call to say that we are finally the same. We are the same if you are from Africa or if you are from Asia. Try to unite us because beyond the skin we are identical.”
