HOW TO GET TO PUERTO DE LA CRUZ FROM TENERIFE SOUTH AIRPORT

ADVICE FROM MEMBERS OF OUR FACEBOOK GROUP

Most travellers to Puerto de la Cruz will arrive at the airport in the South of Tenerife, and with a journey time of just over an hour to get from there to your hotel on the other side of the island, you may be wondering the best way to arrive safely!    This is a common subject inside our Facebook group where our members regularly share their experiences and offer suggestions as to how best to make this journey!  We will share their thoughts with you here so that you can make an informed decision as to the best option for you.

The most popular recommendation is to pre book transfers, so let’s look at this option first.

PREBOOKING TRANSFERS – STRESS FREE, COMFORTABLE AND SAFE

This is a firm favourite with our group members, who book online in advanced before they travel.   There are two options – a private transfer which means that you pay for a vehicle for your own private use and this will transport you directly from the airport to your hotel reception.   This can a popular choice for larger parties and for those with small children as quite often car seats can be reserved at time of booking!   The other option is a shared transfer, which is the cheaper option as you pay per person!   Group members do often comment though, that there can be a long wait at the airport before the coach sets off, as you wait for other flights to arrive and join you.   Another common issue is that there are often multiple hotel drop offs before reaching your own one.    Both issues can prolong your journey time and turn a journey of one hour or so into one of perhaps of over 2 hours.  However the plus of this service is that for a lone traveller or smaller parties, this is a very cost-effective way to arrive in Puerto de la Cruz.

POPULAR AIRPORT TRANSFER COMPANIES

Many group members opt to use airport transfer companies to get them from the South airport to their accommodation in Puerto de la Cruz.   Within our Facebook group, three different companies tend to get mentioned the most.   We have listed them below so just click on the images and find out more about each company and the services they offer.

TAXIS – QUICK, COSTLY BUT OFTEN WITH A LONG WAIT

Taxis are available at the Arrivals Hall of Tenerife South Airport.  This is the quickest option for getting to Puerto de la Cruz with a journey time of approximately one hour.  However, it is costly (current price around 140 euros) and quite often, depending upon your arrival time to the island, there can be long waiting times as you join the queue.  Often as well, families will find that car seats are not readily available.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT WITH TITSA – THE MOST ECONOMICAL OPTION

This is a popular option amongst our Facebook group members mainly due to the price (currently 15 euros per person).   There is a direct bus from the South Airport to Puerto de la Cruz (which stops off also at the North Airport), bus number 343.   There are only 4 buses daily so it can be tricky to tie in with your flight arrival (check the timetable here https://www.titsa.com/index.php/tus-guaguas/lineas-y-horarios/linea-343)    Plus points are that there is plenty of room for your luggage, it’s a direct route to Puerto de la Cruz, and also a very efficient service generally running according to the timetable.     If the bus times for the 343 do not work with your arrival time, then there is the option to take a bus to the capital Santa Cruz and change there for a bus to Puerto, however this can be a problematic if you have lots of luggage or if you are arriving late at night.      The other issue of course, is once you arrive at Puerto, although there are various stops before the bus reaches its destination at the station in the centre of town, your hotel may not be very close to any stops!

The local bus service operated by TITSA is generally a great, reliable service.   Find out more here about travelling with them.    https://puertodelacruz.info/titsa-bus-service/

HIRING A CAR

A great option if you also plan on exploring the island of Tenerife during your stay.   This again can be prebooked prior to your departure.   With good signage, generally good road conditions and cheap(ish) petrol this is a popular choice.    Downsides can be that there are often long queues at the car hire desk at the Arrivals Hall and that parking in Puerto de la Cruz can be a challenge, so it may be wise to make sure your hotel has its own private parking before considering this as an option.

A COUPLE OF TIPS FROM OUR FACEBOOK GROUP MEMBERS

Know your arrival and departure times for checking public bus times, or to ensure that the information you give to your airport transfer company or car hire company is correct.

Check drop off points for transfers and the local bus in relation to your hotel accommodation.

For shared transfers, look at options that confirm a maximum number of hotel drop offs (this may be slightly more expensive) but it will save you a trip around the houses and cut down on your journey time.

Always give yourself plenty of time to get to the airport after your holiday to ensure you don’t miss your flight.  Allow for traffic delays en route.

Use a legally registered mode of transport – do not be tempted by individuals offering to drive you in their own car.  They won’t be insured, and they will be operating illegally.
