Beaches in Puerto de la Cruz

PLAYA JARDIN 🏖️

Three different beaches that make up the area known collectively as Playa Jardin

  • PLAYA MARIA JIMENEZ

Close to Punta Brava and the Loro Parque, 300 metres of black sand, suitable for families.    Lifeguard on duty.  Volleyball court with regular competitions.  Beach showers for washing off that sand!   Burger Bar has just recently re-opened after being closed for nearly 5 years (from midday until 8pm, food only until 6pm).  Newly refurbished bathrooms and showering facilities open daily from 10am until 6pm.  Sunbeds and parasols are available to hire on this beach. Parking is on the road and not always easy.

  • PLAYA CHICA

A small cove where the sand is also black but mixed in with some pebbles in some places!  Lifeguard on duty.  Swimming is relatively safe.  On beach showers for washing away the sand.   Closest bar is El Quisco which is located above the beach.  No sunbeds or parasols available to hire.  Parking is limited to street parking.

  • PLAYA DEL CASTILLO

So called because of its proximity to the Castillo de San Felipe.  To get into the sea at this beach you need to battle your way through a lot of stones.  Further away from the sea, the beach is sandy.   There are sunbeds available to hire on this beach.   Also, a lifeguard on duty.  On beach showering facilities as well as recently refurbished bathrooms and toilets (open 10am until 6pm).  Also, a beach side bar/restaurant serving food and drinks from 10am until 6pm.   Parking is on the roadside or in the nearby port car park with a walk of about 10 minutes to reach the beach.

PLAYA DEL MUELLE 🐚

This beach is popular with the locals and is made up almost entirely of stones and pebbles.  No facilities on this beach but as it is so close to the town centre there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby.   No lifeguard and no sunbeds for rental.  Protected by the port walls, the sea here is usually calm.   Parking available in the adjacent car park.

PLAYA SAN TELMO 🌊

Easy to find as it is right along the main promenade close overlooked by the little San Telmo Church.   This beach again is made up of stones and pebbles with some patchy sandy areas.  No sunbeds for hire but there is a lifeguard on duty.  Plenty of naturual rock pools to keep snorkellers entertained.   On beach showers.  Recently opened beach side bar on the paved area by the rock pools.  Caution needs to be taken to enter in the water by the rock pools as it can be slippery.    Also, very popular with the locals and can get extremely busy in the summer months.   No bathroom facilities.  Closest parking option would be at the port car park with a short walk through the town to reach the beach.

PLAYA MARTIÁNEZ 🌟

At the far end of Puerto de la Cruz and next to the Lago de Martiánez – a popular choice for surfers.  Stony beach with limited sandy areas, making it difficult also to get into the sea (some protective footwear would be a good idea!)   Lifeguard on duty.  No sunbeds available to rent.  There is a beach side restaurant/bar but at time of writing, this is closed for refurbishment.   Limited roadside parking although there is paid parking nearby at the Centro Comercial Martiánez.

BE SAFE

Respect that the sea is a natural phenomenon so be vigilant and pay attention to the coloured flags which will be displayed on all beaches (green meaning it is safe to swim, yellow meaning swim with caution and red meaning do not swim).    Wear sun tan lotion and it's always a good idea to have some protective footwear, the sand can get very hot and as we have said, some beaches are quite stony.
