The Lure of the Limerick At The English Library

The English Library is presenting the second of their winter talk series on Thursday 19 December at 1pm. Librarian Chris Hair is presenting an updated version of a talk he first gave at the library in 2017.

Back by popular demand, "The Lure of the Limerick" traces the history of this truly British verse form, and is copiously splattered with examples, some naughty, some nice, but all designed to tickle the old funny bone!

The talk will be followed by a selection of European Christmas cakes, washed down with Cava. Non-library members are most welcome to attend.

In January Derek Winterbottom relates the enthralling story of the relationship between crime sleuth Agatha Christie and her husband Archie.

February sees the return of Chris Hair with another of his talks on Ancient Egypt: this time he examines the fact and fiction surrounding Cleopatra VII, one of only a handful of female pharaohs that ruled that remarkable civilisation.

The season concludes in March with a talk by Graham Taylor on Marianne North, a Victorian botanist and artist who traveled the world, compiling a journal of her experiences. Graham introduces us to the intrepid explorer and relates her visit to Tenerife.

All talks cost €15 and include a buffet with wine, with a special offering of Cava, mince-pies and various European Christmas cakes after the December talk. Book at the Treasurer's Desk.
